DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization) is a system for developmental kinesiology, which studies the way babies develop through their involvement. This correlates to athletes because, through our athletic training, we can create imbalances within our movement patterns. We correct these by bringing the athlete back to their basic level and running them through developmental kinesiology. The main principle is that we are learning to rewire our body to work from the inside out versus the outside in.
An example of “outside in” is all the TikTok and Instagram videos you see of “do this hip mobility routine to fix your low back pain.” Working from the inside out is what your primary stabilization system is and how to activate it with breathing, proper abdominal pressure, and restoring fundamental movement patterns.
DNS has quickly become one of the top therapies sport providers utilize for the treatment of athletes. DNS provides recovery from musculoskeletal overuse injuries and is a great tool to use for injury prevention. DNS will teach patients and athletes how to properly synchronize breathing, stabilize the spine, and use soft tissue and joints properly.
DNS principles can be applied to every single athletic movement we do, even bending down to pick something up. These principles are very important during the big three and rotatory movements (golf, baseball). If breathing technique is not normalized, no other movement pattern can be. Most importantly, DNS teaches you how to turn on your internal weightlifting belt.
At FRWD Sports Therapy, Dr. Cappelletti utilizes DNS to help patients re-learn how to move properly and train dysfunctions. Contact us to learn more about DNS!
